Rumors of monorail expansion have existed for years, however on the heels of Monorail Red operating on the Epcot line with a door open the rumors have resurfaced.
Details are minimal at this point, but a replacement for some or all of the trains may soon be on the horizon. An April 2018 article on WDWNT.com reports that trains have been ordered by Canadian company Bombardier. This has not been confirmed by any other source.
Bombardier is the manufacturer of the current Mark VI monorails that are in use at Walt Disney World.
May 13, 2018: On Episode 161 of the Disney Dish Podcast, Jim Hill and Len Testa discuss a recent patent filed by Disney for augmented reality. They speculated this could be used on the new monorail trains.
May 11, 2018: WDWMagic.com user Rteetz is reporting that "things are moving" on this project and "may not be as gradual as one may have thought".
In a follow up post he did clarify that he didn't expect all new trains to be in place by 2021.
April 28, 2018: In a discussion about the 1964-65 World's Fair, Disney Legend Bob Gurr reported that Disney is talking with monorail manufacturer Bombardier about a new fleet of trains for Walt Disney World. BlogMickey.com posted full video of the event
April 20, 2018: WDWMagic.com user marni1971 is reporting that new trains have not been ordered.
April 16, 2018: WDWMagic.com user MansionButler84 is reporting that new trains will be at Walt Disney World by 2021.
April 16, 2018: WDWMagic.com user Rteetz is reporting that no new monorail fleet has been ordered yet.
April 16, 2018: WDWNT.com is reporting that a new fleet of Monorails has been ordered for Walt Disney World. The trains will reportedly be built by Bombardier of Canada, the same company that manufactured the current Mark VI trains. The article also speculated that the trains would likely be a version of Bombardier's INNOVIA 300 model. This model is currently being used in Brazil and Saudi Arabia.
Part of the article also alleges that funding for the cancelled Main Street USA theater project was reallocated to the new fleet of Monorails.
January 24, 2018: WDWMagic.com user Rteetz is reporting that Disney is meeting with companies about potential monorail replacements.
January 6, 2018: @abbieprimeknits on Instagram posted a video of the door on Monorail Red open while the monorail was in operation on the Epcot loop.
